I married Larry King (Catalina Class of 59) after a 5-year engagement and our graduation
from the UA.
We moved to Illinois in 1965 where we lived for a few months before Larry enlisted in the
Army. He beat his draft notice by a month or so. I moved back to Tucson and worked at
Hughes Aircraft for about a year until he graduated from Officer Candidate School and
started his Army career as an officer in 1966.
I became an “Army Wife” facing many moves every 2-3 years, periods of separation when
duty called, and limited opportunities to establish a career of my own.
Larry’s first tour was for 2 ½ years in Amberg, Germany where he was with the 2nd
Armored Cavalry Regiment. I accompanied him but his duty kept him in the field for
extended periods of time. I filled my time by running the small library at the military facility.
I became interested in library work (don’t know why I didn’t consider it earlier in life) and
through the years have taken graduate courses toward a master’s in library science. Our
frequent moves kept me completing the degree. But I was still able to have a rewarding
career in the Federal Civil Service system and always had a fulfilling job at the various
places Larry was assigned.
After Germany, Larry was in Vietnam where he was assigned to the Signal Brigade HQ,
stationed with the US Army HQ in Long Binh. We were fortunate that the only hostile
action he faced was from occasional incoming mortar rounds, and rats and cockroaches in
the BOQ. Our first daughter was born at Davis Monthan AFB five months after he left for
Vietnam. I attended the UA during that time where I started studying library science.
When Larry came back from Vietnam, we went to Ft Huachuca, AZ for three years where
our second daughter was born. Then on to Fort Gordon, GA, Fort Leavenworth, KS, and
back to Fort Huachuca. The girls and I stayed in the Fort Huachuca area while Larry
spent a year in Korea. When he returned it was on to Fort Ord, CA, Heidelberg, Germany,
and for a final assignment, back to Fort Leavenworth KS. We have remained in the
Leavenworth/Kansas City area since 1983.
Larry retired from active duty in 1985 after a 20-year career and was hired as a civilian by
the Dept of Army at Ft. Leavenworth doing essentially the same job he had before –
computers. Larry retired as a DA civilian in 2005 prior to major surgery that kept us from
attending the 45th reunion. He is fine now and plays golf every morning.
I started working full time for the Dept of Army in 1977 when we were stationed at Fort
Huachuca the second time. I worked for Uncle Sam a total of 30 years with 28 years of
them as a library technician. I retired from the military college library at Ft. Leavenworth in
2007.
I am now a stay-at-home mom to our two cats, but go back to the military library each
Wednesday and volunteer in the Archives. It helps me keep track of what day of the week
it is and allows me to stay in touch with old friends.
Our daughter, Kelly, and her husband, Greg, live in Vail, AZ, and both work for Raytheon.
Our other daughter, Kendy, lives in St Joseph, MO with her husband, Jason, and their two
children, Elaina 10, and Dawson 7. We visit them about every two weeks and they bring
much joy and excitement to our lives. Grandchildren are such special people.
Larry and I are looking forward to seeing everyone at the 50th reunion.
