After graduating from CHS, Ed attended the University of
Arizona where he majored in history. He graduated in
1964 Phi Beta Kappa and with a National Woodrow
Wilson fellowship to attend the University of Virginia,
where he earned his MA in 1965 and finished all course
work and orals for the PhD in European History the
following year. He met his wife Lu Knibb there. She was
a graduate student in English.
Ed left UVA in 1967 to teach a year at the University of
Richmond, and then went to the Virginia Military Institute
for a one-year appointment. That turned out to be a 30
year plus career. He taught history full time for four
years and then entered the administration, where he
held various posts including Public Information Officer,
Institute Planning Officer, Executive Assistant to the
Superintendent (president), Secretary to the Board of
Visitors, and Coordinator of International Programs. He
also taught French for 6 years (wouldn't Miss Royce be
surprised!) As coordinator of international programs, Ed
set up exchange programs between VMI and the Ecole
Polytechnique in France and the National Defense
Academy in Tallinn, Estonia.
Ed's wife worked as a fund raiser for VMI for 15 years.
Ed retired in 2001 and Lu retired in 2003. Ed still works
part time for the VMI Superintendent and, last year,
taught a history course in Intellectual History of Modern
Europe. Lu rides horses, runs, and is a Hospice
volunteer.
Ed and Lu have a daughter, Kathleen, who is married
and is a school teacher. She and her husband, also a
school teacher, just had their first child, Ed and Lu's only
grandchild -- a little girl.
Ed has missed all previous reunions because they
always came at the busiest time in the VMI calendar, but
he is looking forward with great pleasure to attending
the 50th. He has returned to Tucson from time to time
and has enjoyed very much visiting with old friends and
classmates.
Ed's looking forward to the 50th!
